Malik Brown Commits to Syracuse

2-star defensive end Malik Brown was thought to be waiting until January to choose which school he will be playing for in 2013. Those plans changed as he chose Syracuse on Wednesday.

Malik Brown made no secret about how much he loved his official visit to Syracuse. But he was still going to take other visits and decide in January. Those plans changed as he committed to Syracuse Wednesday night.

"I am so blessed to say that tonight I officially committed to Syracuse," Brown said via Twitter.

The William T. Dwyer (FL) product has developed a great relationship with the coaching staff. The official visit was big for him, as it allowed him to get to know Doug Marrone on a different level.

"All the coaches made me feel comfortable," Brown said. "Coach Marrone made a good comment, he was like I don't matter where I go, he just wants to see me succeed. That means a lot to me.

"They've been showing me so much love. I just feel at home with Syracuse."

Feeling at home has been a common theme for Syracuse commits, and that was also the case with Brown. He continued to point to that feeling as the biggest reason why he pledged to the Orange. The first time he got that feeling was on his official visit less than two weeks ago. It was a feeling he couldn't shake.

"I loved it," he said. "I had a great time, I got to chill with the coaches, and they're pretty cool. It just felt like home."

After that visit, the Syracuse staff continued to go hard after the talented Palm Beach Gardens product. The efforts of Marrone and company went a long way towards landing Syracuse's fourteenth 2013 commitment.

"It was the home feeling," Brown said. "I called him (Steve Morrison) and I was like 'coach I want to commit.' He went crazy."

The role Brown will be playing with the Orange has still not been completely defined. The Syracuse staff sees potential for him as an edge rusher and as a possible linebacker. Where he falls on the depth chart will be determined when he arrives on campus this summer.

"He said I'm going to have my hand on the ground and I'm going to stand up," Brown explained. "I'm going to be doing both. (I'm) very comfortable (with that).

"I'm a hybrid defensive end, linebacker. I'm a very good leader."

After committing, one of the first people Brown notified was his former high school teammate and current Syracuse freshman Julian Whigham. Whigham sent Brown a congratulatory text, and Brown indicated that his now future teammate knew it was coming after the visit.

In addition, Brown's family is extremely excited about the opportunity he now has.

"They're going crazy right now," he admitted. "They're just happy that I'm going to school."

The two-star DE/LB chose Syracuse over Mississippi State, South Florida, Minnesota, Illinois, Cincinnati, Kentucky, and many others.
